The City of Brea realizes this uniquely fantastic combination of great weather, fabulous shopping, delicious dining, award winning schools and over one-hundred forty public art displays throughout the city.
The acclaimed Brea-Olinda School District operates seven California distinguished schools plus two Blue Ribbon schools: Olinda Elementary and Brea Olinda High Schools awarded the most prestigious honor U.S. schools may receive in achievement of significant improvements serving disadvantaged students.
Brea enjoys some of the region's most splendid recreational open space reserves found locally. Popular with nature revelers, Carbon Canyon County Park has more than one-hundred twenty acres of coastal Pepper, Sycamore, Eucalyptus, Pine and gorgeous Redwood Trees interspersed amongst more than sixty acres of trails. The Brea Sports Park at the corner of Valencia Avenue & Birch Street hosts the community services department's regular organized youth and adult sports activities. The Brea Creek Municipal Golf Course is a nine-hole par twenty-nine executive golf course frequented year round by North Orange County golfers! Many local Breans enjoy Ted Craig Regional Park where one hundred twenty plus acres of winding trails meander alongside two year-round creeks flowing between rolling hills of large mature trees and open spaces with a rose garden and small pond. Brea also participates with its neighbors Placentia and Fullerton in maintenance of more than forty acres known as the Tri-City Park.
Brea's pedestrian oriented downtown promenade, also known as "Birch Street," boasts more than fifty acres of shopping, entertainment and dining options including the Melting Pot, Yard House, Improv Comedy Club, Old Navy & Edwards Stadium Movie Theatre Complex. The Brea Lofts are a popular place to live and locals love frequenting the nearby farmer's market. Other exclusive neighborhoods include Olinda Ranch at Valencia Avenue & Lambert Road as well Walden Estates located east of Kraemer Boulevard to the north of Lambert Road. Nearly eight hundred homes have been proposed just north of Brea in "Tonner Hills" to be annexed by the city.
Brea has several beautiful shopping centers the crown jewel of which is "Brea Mall"- opened in 1978 with over one-million square feet and Nordstrom's, Macy's, JC Penny & Sears Department stores. The Mall is also home to more than two hundred specialty boutiques and a large foot court. Other shopping destinations in Brea include the Brea Marketplace, Union Plaza, East Imperial Center and the Brea Gateway Shopping Center.
Originally two separate towns "Randolph" & "Olinda," the region experienced its first population boom when the Brea-Olinda Oil Field was discovered nearby and those towns merged to form the city now called "Brea" c. 1911, or "tar" in Español. At one time in the 1920's the Brea-Olinda Oild field produced one-fifth of the world's oil! When the region's oil production began waning (tapering off to only four-hundred operating wells today), land owners turned to farming citrus groves before suburban sprawl encroached Brea's way. The 1970's "Orange" freeway- State Highway 57 construction completion would make the region quickly accessible by auto thus ensuring Brea's metropolitan transformation.
