The City of Garden Grove is an ethnically diverse melting pot of vibrant sights and exciting international cuisine at the crossroads of culture and opportunity in the heart of Orange County's acclaimed suburbanly sublime metropolitan convenience.
Garden Grove enjoys many beautiful public parks offering open fields, public pools and tennis courts. However no park is more especially loved by area youth than Atlantis Play Center where several large concrete slides resembling sea serpents whisk children to their feet running between play stations.
The Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) operates forty plus elementary schools, nine middle schools and eight high schools including Bolsa Grande High's "Matadors;" Garden Grove High's "Argonauts;" La Quinta High's "Aztecs;" Pacifica High's "Mariners;" Rancho Alamitos High's "Vaqueros;" and Santiago High's "Cavaliers." GGUSD additionally administers Hare High's "Huskies" and Lincoln High's "Ladybugs" where students learn outside of the confines of traditional coursework in a flexible and personalized environment. All GGUSD high schools have full six-year accreditations from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and five comprehensive high schools are listed among our nation's best in U.S. News & World Report magazine.
A community of tradition, Garden Grove celebrates the annual "Strawberry Festival" soliciting an regular list of local as well up and coming celebrity grand marshals. Local families and visitors alike also enjoy Orange County's oldest classic car show held every Friday from 4-8 p.m. on Main Street.
Garden Grove has been a beneficiary of the diverse influences brought to the region by the Vietnamese refugee exodus of the 1970's. Today the second largest community of Vietnamese-Americans, only behind Winsome Westminster, resides here in Garden Grove.
By the time California attained statehood in 1850, present day Garden Grove was at least partially located within Rancho Los Alamitos- the largest cattle ranch in the U.S. and that distinction achieved in becoming the largest supplier of beef to the northern goldfields. When the locally legendary Bixby family teamed with William A. Clark and E.A. Dyer to build a new sugar beet factory complex on the Bixby's land, the community that sprung up with new roads and houses was called Los Alamitos: Garden Grove's neighbor. Up until 1940, Garden Grove was a sleepy little town of a few thousand people surrounded by orange, avocado and walnut groves. By 1950, Garden Grove was one of the fastest growing municipalities in America as servicemen returning from WWII acquired reasonably priced houses on the G.I. Bill. Today, Garden Grove is known for suburban tract housing and for hosting Robert Schuller's gorgeous "Crystal Cathedral" (now operated of the Catholic Diocese of Orange County.) Of other meritorious note, the enclave of West Garden Grove, merely connected to its namesake by a sliver strip of land running alongside Garden Grove Blvd, is positioned near more affluent neighborhoods in Seal Beach: property tax haven found!
