The legendary sun, surf and sand of "H.B." as bandied about by here found locals, have drawn millions of visitors from all over the world to its beautiful shores in pursuit of recreation, habitation and conservation. Visitors flock to resorts like the Hyatt, Hilton and Shorebreak Hotels in Downtown Huntington Beach where contemporary culinary catering is famously paired with perfect sunsets over gleaming Pacific surf.
Huntington Beach maintains top rated schools managed by three neighborhood school board districts promoting this compassionate community's involvement in public education. Ocean View School District's fifteen schools (fourteen of which have received California's prestigious distinguished school awards) serve western Huntington Beach. Huntington Beach City School District is H.B.'s second K-8 school board operating seven elementary and two middle schools serving the eastern half of HB (including California Distinguished School Dwyer Intermediate.) The Huntington Beach Union High School District manages "Marina," "Ocean View" and "Huntington Beach" High Schools. Nearby Goldenwest Junior College remains a magnet for area high- school graduates matriculating into state professional and university undergraduate programs.
"Huntington" comprises actually four beaches: one city maintained and geographically sandwiched between two other state operated beaches with the far northern "Sunset Beach," managed by the County of Orange and whose community was annexed by H.B. in 2011. Four legged friends frolic about the region's only legally permitted off-leash "dog friendliest beach" between Seapoint & 21st Streets: 1.5 miles of designated canine fun zone. Huntington Beach's world class parks include "Central Park," boasting new comprehensive recreational facilities and the gorgeous Dion Neutra designed Huntington Central Library on Lake Talbert. The nearby Adventure Playground "mud park" is a celebrated rite of summer for area youth and the Equestrian Center across Goldenwest Street offers training, horse rentals to the public and guided trail rides through the park. Golfers enjoy two courses in HB including a casual eighteen hole course dubbed "Meadowlark," and at the exclusive "SeaCliff Country Club," families enjoy dining, fitness, tennis and social amenities in addition to eighteen holes of meticulously manicured greens. Members dine at the course as respite from everyday bustle where gorgeous grounds also play host to private events including weddings all while extolling local visitors to peaceful reflection in the fresh salty ocean air.
On display in Downtown Huntington Beach is surf culture celebrated. Since the days of the legendary Duke Kamehameha, Huntington Beach became internationally known for the dependable surf emanating from ocean swells "edge-diffracting" around Catalina Island directly off the coast. Those consistent waves entitled Huntington Beach to the throne of "Surf City U.S.A." consistently drawing the U.S. Open of Surfing for annual summer surfing celebration. Of note is H.B.'s pier remaining one of the longest on the West Coast because the community has rebuilt that concrete structure only four times in the 20th century.
H.B.'s diverse ecosystem boasts some of the last remaining endangered coastal California migratory tidal wetlands. Along three uninterrupted miles of Huntington Beach's regionally unique waterfront, the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve (BCER) stands out for the scope of its restoration efforts. Local birders account for more than three hundred of the region's four hundred twenty species enjoying refuge at BCER. Neighboring Huntington Harbor was created in the 1960's from dredging the Sunset Bay Estuary Wetlands to form five exclusive manmade islands comprised of today's prized dock of the bay front home sites. Some of those still standing original homes remain mid-century modern treasures.
Recently redeveloped, the Bella Terra Shopping Center has revitalized the economy while improving the look and feel of the H.B.'s formerly under attended but now Winsome Westminster border shopping area. Other exciting news in the area (for youth) revealed that Vans is in exclusive negotiations with H.B. to develop the area's only "world class" Skate Park for public benefit at Center Ave. and Gothard St. The skate park facility is set to include a twelve thousand sq. ft. skate plaza, fifteen thousand sq. ft. skate bowl and an elevated area with adjacent skate and snack shop concessions.
Interestingly, H.B. has historically maintained several incarnations including: "Shell Beach", "Smeltzer", "Gospel Swamp", "Fairview", and finally "Pacific City" before 1909 when volitionally assuming moniker of corporate sponsorship becoming namesake of Mr. Henry Huntington- the iconic industrialist and Pacific Electric's President who brought the electric "red car" trolley system to Newport Beach from Los Angeles via "Huntington Beach" by 1904.
