About Los Alamitos

The City of Los Alamitos "Los Al" city residents celebrate their traditional heritage steadfastly realizing a regionally respected and prodigiously effective community service vision. Those qualities are no doubt an inextricable benefit gifted by those discharged service members finding local permanent residence here achieving that transcendent quality of family life Los Alamitos' is renowned for. Several neighborhoods still proudly bear military moniker such as "Carrier Row" with many local streets named for famous WWII seafaring USN vessels.

The respected Los Alamitos School District (LASD) operates five primary schools and thanks to confirmed local bond measure three "Los Alamitos," "Hopkinson" and "Rossmoor" Elementary Schools are being modernized. "Oak" and "McAuliffe" (formerly Pine) Middle Schools serve adolescents in Los Alamitos going onto the distinguished award winning Los Alamitos "Los Al" High School, where curriculum receives both highest national and state honors for students' exceptional achievements. LASD additionally administers Laurel High School where students enjoy curriculum outside of the confines of traditional coursework in a flexible and personalized environment.

Los Alamitos maintains nine parks of which "Little Cottonwood" and "Laurel" Parks enjoy the most amenities. Little Cottonwood offers sun seekers picnic shelters adjacent BBQ's, sand volleyball courts, basketball courts, soccer & softball fields, paved jogging path and children's playground. Nearby, Laurel has large lighted softball and soccer fields as well four tennis courts. Now open to the public, the area's most excellent "Navy Golf Course," is every revelers' delight offering both the eighteen hole championship "Destroyer Course" and nine hole executive "Cruiser Course" for beginners or a relaxed half round with family and friends. The course advertises itself as being in Cypress when it is in reality park of Los Al city limits.

Area golfers enjoy "Old Ranch" Country Club adjacent Los Al in neighboring Seal Beach, boasting replete practice facilities near the championship golf course, as well a world class fitness center and fine dining restaurant serving club members sumptuously classic fare. The grounds of Old Ranch play regular host to beautiful weddings and social events in the fresh ocean air.

Los Alamitos Medical Center is not only the area's premiere medical facility and emergency room but also the city's largest employer. The Medical center takes pride in eight maternity "birthing suites" where expectant mothers labor before transitioning to one of nine post-partum recovery lounges.

The historic Los Alamitos Horse Race Track plays year round host to Arabian, Quarter Hours and Thoroughbred racing where pari-mutuel wagering equine enthusiasts simultaneously indulge in sumptuous gourmet dining at the "Vessel Club" as named for the informal match races held at "Vessels Ranch" circa 1947. Quarter Horse racing at Los Alamitos in 2012 will see more than twenty million dollars in aggregate purses claimed!

In 1941, Mrs. Susanna Bixby Bryant would sell the United States Navy nearly two square miles from which the military would construct the historic Los Alamitos Army Airfield where present day Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Center is home to regional Army, Navy, National Guard and Marine reserves at the command of California's National Guard. This base provided Los Alamitos with thousands of jobs and spurred modest regional economic growth over several decades. The Guard still maintains the airfield where support and training operations for military units as well other national and state emergency personnel are facilitated.

By the time of California attained statehood in 1850, Rancho Los Alamitos was the largest cattle ranch in the U.S., and that distinction primarily achieved as largest beef supplier to the northern gold fields. When local Bixby family legends teamed with William A. Clark and E.A. Dyer to build a new sugar beet factory complex on Bixby land, that flourishing town with new roads and homes was called Los Alamitos- or the "little cottonwoods" en Español. By 1956, another local So Cal legend- Ross Cortese would purchase more than seven hundred fifty acres from the Irvine Company developing Orange County's single largest ever detached tract home neighborhood, billing "Rossmoor" as a "Long Beach suburb" and drawing neighborhood's distinctive namesake from the area's originally marshy "moor"ish (Scottish word for land) conditions as portmanteau parlance: "RossMoor." Cortese would sell more than thirty-five hundred homes over three years for only about twenty thousand dollars each before going onto Leisure World fame down the street in Seal Beach! Remaining unincorporated to this day, Rossmoor still uses Los Alamitos as mailing address. Occasional discussion brews of eventual annexation or merger of Los Alamitos, Seal Beach & Rossmoor into larger municipal entity. That reality has yet to materialize but the City of Los Alamitos incorporated sans Rossmoor circa 1960. Quasi-governmental, the Rossmoor Community Services District manages the street lighting, installation of parkway landscaping and street sweeping in that neighborhood.

The Rancho's historic nineteenth century adobe adjacent California State University Long Beach was donated by the Bixby family and stands to this day as a museum displaying historic gardens designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. In the 1980's, amazingly six Los Al locals were playing Major League Baseball simultaneously: Greg Harris, Mike Kelly, Dennis Lamp, Robb Nen, Greg Pirkl and J.T. Snow! Of note, the first location of locally popular (for deliciously huge portions) restaurant chain "Claim Jumper" opened here c. 1977, although since moving that flagship eatery to nearby Long Beach.
