If Ozzie and Harriet hailed from Orange County, they would have been "home" with City of Orange and its eponymous "Downtown America" charm. The only city in Orange County built around a plaza, the one square mile Historic District of Downtown Orange is adorned by no less than seven different architectural styles, many of which are a century old or more. Central to the Historical District is the seriously charming large traffic circle enclosing the Public Park Plaza's beautiful water fountain! Lining the traffic circle are businesses maintaining the look and feel of yesteryear's Orange County with the region's oldest operating bank and soda fountain! The downtown area continues to be enhanced with Chapman University's installation their law program attracting the best and brightest from around the country.
The Orange Unified School District operates sixteen elementary schools as well four middle schools and three high schools including the Orange Panthers, Villa Park Spartans and El Modena "ElMo." Nearby Santiago Canyon College remains a magnet for area high school graduates matriculating into state professional and university undergraduate programs.
Orange's prolific scope of available family activities includes several large open space public parks. Irvine Regional Park, the O.C.'s oldest, began as a one hundred sixty five acre oak grove donated from James Irvine, Jr. for its preservation and citizens' benefit. Irvine Park now stands at almost five-hundred acres dedicated to public enjoyment with a lake thereon and Orange County's second smaller zoo too. About four miles away and shared with the City of Tustin, Peters Canyon Regional Park preserved more than three-hundred fifty acres as open space set aside with public use trails traversing the natural landscape of coastal sage scrub, freshwater marsh and grassland habitats. Families also enjoy seasonal youth pop-warner football and little league programs.
As the home of the internationally recognized UCI Medical Center and the Orange County Children's Hospital, Orange city planners also encourage modern development. Local residents and visitors alike enjoy the modern Orange Outlets (formerly "the Block"), and inclined revelers may even take flight in delight of the 42,000 sq. ft. Vans indoor/ outdoor skate park.
Orange residents enjoy traditionally classic fare at "Citrus City Cafe" where favorites include the filet mignon, sea bass and stuffed chicken. Local dining excitment includes "Bruxie," where diners dish on savory gourmet waffle sandwiches.
The City of Orange's original incarnation, "Richland" was abandoned when 1873 local USPS station installation application failed for not being the first "Richland, California." Orange received one of the earliest starts of any Orange County city due to the area's citrus crop and the resulting installation of a train station nearby to move produce. The current train station was rebuilt and rededicated in 1938, standing to this day as on of the city's most recognizable restored historic landmarks.
