San Juan Capistrano has preserved one of the most diverse land use communities in Orange County from eighteenth century adobes and turn of the century homes to gated estates and working ranches in the foothills.
Award winning Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) operates four primary schools as well the Marco Forster Middle School and three secondary schools within the city limits. The honored Capistrano Valley "Capo Valley" High School has received distinguished state and national blue ribbon honors in addition to national Newsweek ranking among the top five hundred of all high schools. CUSD also operated the new San Juan Hills High as well the innovative California Preparatory Academy "Cal Prep" where students benefit from an independent study high school with the flexibility of UC/CSU approved virtual curriculum coursework featuring blended face-to-face instruction.
San Juan Capistrano maintains acres of manicured parks dotting neighborhoods throughout the city's bucolic beauty. One of Orange County's most popular parks, "Casper's" Wilderness Park, lays at the base of scenic Santa Ana foothills. Here campers, hikers and equine enthusiasts enjoy eight thousand acres of protected coastal oak and sycamore trees gracing several sandstone canyons in the Trabuco watershed. Nearby, the locally famous San Juan Capistrano Hot Springs (San Juan Hot Spings Canyon Creek headwaters) closed when Caltrans widened the Ortega Highway to the side of this legendary attraction eliminating several trees formerly providing private bathing opportunities in addition to the hot springs operators who could not keep up with the constantly changing regulatory climate in such remote surroundings
SJC is one of the oldest and most historic cities in California. Downtown visitors enjoy the "Los Rios District" which remains the longest continually inhabited neighborhood in California with over thirty authentic buildings on the national register of historic places! Many visitors and residents enjoy regular Pacific Surfliner service nearby at the San Juan Capistrano Train depot, the first stop on one of the most romantic train rides anywhere in America on the way to San Diego or the seasons' Del Mar races. Nearby, SJC's residents also enjoy the large local movie theatre playing all the new releases. Before and after movie folks often dine at the casual Ruby's restaurant or a short walk away at the legendary "el Adobe" where former President Dick Nixon ate regularly.
Area golfer's enjoy San Juan Hills Golf Club as an oasis for both the most avid as well relaxed enthusiasts. Nestled amongst San Juan Capistrano's hills, the Par seventy-one championship golf course offers beautiful waterfall and pond feautres as well fastidiously maintained fairways complemented by driving range, pro shop and "19" restaurant. Setting local gatherings apart, the Club hosts weddings and social events boasting scenic views and their friendly professional staff.
Perhaps the region's most stunningly beautiful houses of worship, the San Juan Capistrano's Mission Basilica evokes the historical spirit of those times in which Father Serra's Mission San Juan Capistrano served as central religious complex cornerstone. The Basilica is respectfully patterned after the Mission's stone temple destroyed by 1812 earthquake, displaying its fabulous grand retablo underneath a majestic dome gracing views of the foothills for several miles in all directions. This seventh legendary San Juan Capistrano "Jewel" of the twenty-one missions was famously home to a Cliff Swallow pilgrimage and those flocks of birders annually transfixed by trans-hemispheric fowl migration all the way from sister city: Goya, Argentina! However to the dismay of residents and revelers alike, since 2009 swallows' nest upon return in and around Vellano County Club just north of Chino Hills State Park. Of note is California's oldest building still in use- the Mission's Serra Chapel, where in 1911 famous film pioneer Mary Pickford was married.
Catholic Father Junipero Serra came to California in 1775 proselytizing indigenous peoples as well asserting the territorial ambitions of Spain. Father Serra chose canonized Italian warrior and missionary Giovanni de Capestrano (1386-1456) as favorite namesake for the area. Arroyo Trabuco or "Creek Blunderbuss," was so named for a type of shotgun lost by a member of Gasper de Portola's 1769 expedition travelling through these hills.
