Managed by the County of Orange, "O'Neill" Regional Park is a beautiful reserve comprising both the Trabuco and Live Oak Canyons. Heavily wooded by oak and sycamore trees, the coastal slopes display cactus, wild buckwheat, sagebrush and chaparral of scrub oak, buckthorn and mountain mahogany. Two resplendent creeks, the "Trabuco" and "Hicky" meander about the park, however only flowing in winter and early spring. The nearby "Arroyo Trabuco" wilderness preserve is popular with hikers, mountain bikers, equine enthusiasts, birders and picnickers. Trabuco is also adjacent "Whiting Ranch"- a county reservation of four thousand plus acres comprising thickly forested oak lined canyons steeply descending into rolling grassland terrain. The highlight of any Whiting trip includes a visit to "Red Rock Canyon" and the opportunity to view three different intermittent streams, the Aliso, Borrego and Serrano flowing seasonally.
Served in Orange County's finest restaurants, the county's premier vineyard "Hamilton Oaks" here in Trabuco Canyon offers international award winning handcrafted fine wines aged in French oak barrels. The winery prides itself on satisfying the most discriminating oenophiles' palates with varietals featuring barbera, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and signature red table wine: "Mélange du Sud."
A staple roadside institution just east of Mission Viejo, "Cook's Corner" is a Trabuco biker hangout where good weather may see weekend warriors stacking rides ten deep out front. Bar flies here have been drinking beer, shooting pool and enjoying nightly live music at this local legend since 1937.
Arroyo Trabuco or "Creek Blunderbuss," was so named for a type of shotgun lost by a member of Gasper de Portola's 1769 expedition travelling through these hills. In the early twenthieth century, Trabuco was the site of mining attempts for tin deposits leaving such remnants as sealed tunnels and several small dams on the creek .
