Peters Canyon Regional Park is an established three hundred fifty acre preservation of the region's coastal sage scrub, freshwater marsh and grassland habitat landscapes with well-maintained public use trails throughout open spaces shared with neighboring City of Orange. The park is adjacent to North Tustin, an unincorporated census designated place consisting of the North Tustin, East Tustin, Cowan Heights, Lemon Heights, Panorama Heights and the Red Hill neighborhoods. The Foothill Communities HOA is a non-profit organization created to maintain independence from surrounding communities' annexation efforts preserving the lower taxes that traditionally inure with that vestige. In the 1870's, carriage maker "Columbus Tustin" migrated from Northern California to establish his namesake municipality on thirteen hundred plus acres. Old Town Tustin from the 1880's still exists today displaying the surviving blacksmith shop, feed/tack and grocery/meat markets, as well churches and school buildings. When WWII broke out, the US military acquired what was at the time unincorporated land south of Tustin subsequently dubbing that base Marine Corps Air Station- El Toro.
