Westminster's diverse culture has been forged from regional economic prosperity and international events farmers harvesting the citrus, lima bean, and sugar beet crop here could little have imagined just seventy years ago. Today Westminster enjoys a dynamic economy and productive population while the city's amenities cater to the community as never before, ensuring today's challenges again foster tomorrow's opportunities!
Winsome Westminster loves youth and has completed delivery of both the "Sigler Park Splash Pad" where children enjoy cartoonish water features and nearby Liberty "Skate Park" perfectly suiting entry level beginner as well intermediate skaters. Just across Westminster Boulevard fitness revelers recreate at Sid Goldstein Freedom Park where all manner of activity is available including basketball, handball and lighted tennis courts; lighted regulation size softball fields; children's play area and a community activity building greeting families enjoying picnic tables near BBQ's.
The City of Westminster is served by four school boards including Westminster; Garden Grove Unified; Huntington Beach Union High (HBUHSD) and Ocean View School Districts directing curriculum at sixteen elementary and eight middle schools as well three secondary schools including Westminster High and award winning La Quinta High Schools. At the "HBUHSD Community Day" alternative school students learn outside of the confines of traditional coursework in a flexible and personalized environment.
The Westminster Mall remains the city's largest shopping destination originally opened aside Interstate 405 in 1974. Remodeled in 2008, the mall's pre-eminent retailers include J.C. Penny, Sears, Macy's and a two story Target! Of interesting note, the Mall replaced a 1920's era "world's largest goldfish farm!"
One of Orange County's oldest settlements, Westminster was founded circa 1870 by Reverend Lamuel Webber as a "temperance colony," and named in honor of the 1643 Westminster Assembly's proclamation delineating Presbyterian tenants of faith. The City of Westminster was incorporated in 1957 with ten thousand plus residents; the large majority of whom had bought homes here after WWII military service discharge. Twenty years later the Vietnam War's expelled democratic refugees took asylum here, settling by the thousands and becoming more than one-third of Westminster's population before earning the area's moniker "Little Saigon." In 1996, Westminster received the exclusive "All America City" award for community organization in conquering shared problems.
