The "City of Action"Fantastic Fontana became a hub of industry in no small part due to the earnest efforts of Henry Kaiser's legendary steel mill here subsequently gaining economic traction as a logistics hub serving traffic from 1-15's confluence with State Route 210 as well I-15's significant interchange with I-10.
Four separate school boards serve Fontana including the city's largest -"Fontana Unified" School District operating twenty nine elementary, seven middle, as well the locally popular "Kaiser," "Summit," "Fontana," "A.B. Miller" and "Jurupa Hills" High Schools. The most honored school district in the county, six of Fontana Unified's campuses were recently recognized with California's most distinguished designation including "Dorothy Grant," "Hemlock," "Mango," "Oleander," "Shadow Hills," and "Virginia Primrose," Elementary Schools. California State's most revered award is determined by distinguished school's culture of achievement as well efforts closing achievement gaps. As the city's population has expanded, parents have relied on area supporting school systems including both "Etiwanda" school board operating kindergarten through eighth grade classes and "Chaffey Joint Union High" School District educating northwest Fontana youth; "Colton Joint Unified" School District serving the southeastern city reaches; as well the "Rialto" School District educating Fontana pupils residing in northeast Fontana.
One of the city's largest and newest beautifully manicured open spaces is the eponymous "Fontana Park" home to the comprehensive recreation destination "Jessie Turner Health and Fitness Community Center" boasting aquatic facilities, a dog park, Skate Park, sports pavilion, and several playgrounds as also annually celebrated during the "Fontana Days" and "Fontana Christmas" parades held here. Youth also flock to the "Don Day" Center's seasonal summer pool as well gymnastics, martial arts and dance classes all held adjacent to the large "Southridge Park" featuring public amenities such as basketball and tennis courts baseball fields and mountain bike trails! At the Jack Boulik "Teen Center" adolescents enjoy free video games as well foosball, pool and ping pong tables, plus a fitness center and a computers providing internet access! The nearby skate park and hockey rink are neighborhood favorites. Finally, the Mary Vagle "Nature Center" ensures that no matter how suburban Fontana becomes, its bucolic beauty only belies its historical significance as nestled against Mount Jurupa's foothills. Here a one acre lake meets more than three miles of self-guided trails displaying the area's naturally unspoiled flora and fauna including the occasionally coyote, fox or even magnificent hawk as well rabbits and ducks all taking refuge in their protected habitat. The Nature Center conducts several regular monthly hikes, classes and discussions suited for all ages and interests including evening star parties in beautiful weather hosted by the staff of dedicated and gracious community volunteers.
The San Bernardino County Public Library System has three beautiful facilities in Fontana including the "Lewis Library and Technology Center," as well the "Summit" (located on Summit High's campus) and "Kaiser" branches dedicated to providing a comprehensive collection and programming enriching the lives of everyone in the community.
